FEATURE: AN ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS GIFT ..VOLUNTEER!

One of my favorite things to do around the Christmas season is to watch “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. I am sooo amused at how even a child Charlie Brown’s age can sense the disconnect between the real reason for Christmas verses the “commercial” reasons for Christmas. Throughout the episode, he works through his confusion and his “depression” to find the real reason for Christmas in the end.

Christmas is a very special season for those who are celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Christmas can also be a very sad, stressful and disappointing time for those without financial or family resources. We all have the ability to give our time to those less fortunate; the greatest gift you can give Him for whom we celebrate Christmas. So to overcome the disconnect, consider some volunteering opportunities you can get involved in your community

TOY DRIVES: Children are the most precious treasures here on earth. Although we may not be biological responsible to provide security and happiness for children who are not ours, I think we all have a responsibility to give a little hope to children less fortunate. You can do that by giving your time to give out toys at a toy drive or donate a toy to a children’s charity.

FOOD BANKS: Many are going through tough economic times this year; and many of the food banks in our communities are suffering due to the high demand of those in need. Volunteer your time to sort and/or give out food to those in need. Give can goods or any other non-perishable foods to food banks in our community. Also, keep your eyes and ears open to those who may need the resources of a food bank and refer them to a center or church in the community.

MENTOR: This is an AWESOME way to give to a child in need of the guidance of a caring adult. Just to have the time and attention of someone who has a genuine interest in them can make a MAJOR difference in a young child’s life. There are many organizations in your community such as CASA, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club who are always looking for adults (especially men) to be a voice and/or mentor for a child or teenager.

SPONSOR: Charities are always looking for monetary donations to assist those in the community. Find an organization that has the same mission and goals of your own and give a one time or ongoing donation to a charity of your choice. Also, sponsor a child in your community. A child you may see everyday in your community, you may be able to provide a resource i.e. giving a Christmas toy, coaching or tutoring.

Volunteering is a gift that last year round. It may sound cumbersome or time consuming but it doesn’t take much to give a little to those in need. And trust me, the benefits you feel will be instant and will be returned 10 fold. If you are not able to give your time this Christmas, consider volunteering in the new year. Again, it will be a gift you and the receiver will never forget! ~H.R.
