The Roots – Proceed

This week’s THROWBACK Video Pick comes from the Philadelphia based rap crew THE ROOTS.  The song entitled, ‘Proceed’ is from their 1995 album “Do You want More!!?!?” which also feature classics like ‘Silent Treatmeant’, ‘Mellow My Man’, ‘Lazy Afternoon’ and others. This song is a classic jam that makes you appreciate their live band style of hip-hop and makes think “what if you can just, just blink yourself away! ” ~BT :)

Chrisette Michele’s new video “What You Do” is the third song released off her 2009 album “Epiphany”. The song was written by Ne-yo and he also lends his voice on background. The video features actor Pooch Hall who is better know as ‘Derwin’ from the (now BET) TV show “The Game”. I love this song and the simplicity of the video. Hope you guys enjoy!  ~H.R.

R&B Singer Don Anthony

Don Anthony is an up and coming R&B singer and writer from New Orleans who describes his music as ”Popish-R&B”  Growing up in the Big Easy,  the 24 year old credits his mentor ‘Ms. Butler’ who coached him on how to sing and perform. Her training perfected him as an artist, even instrucing him on details such as how to properly hold the mic. When he was 8 years old, his mother discovered his musical talents. While singing at home his mother told him, ”Boy, you can sing!’ Amazed, Anthony responded “I can?!” Since then, his debut album has been in works.

YOUTHanasia Foundation was established in 1997 to combat teen violence in New Orleans. Kimberly Byas-Dilosa, the founder, felt the need to take the steps to protect teens in the community and in her family. After hearing the concerns of others around her, she realized most  shared the same concerns.  “I had a little sister and younger cousins who were teenagers growing up in ‘the murder capital of the nation.’ So I was compelled to protect them at all cost. So before I knew it, I had a busload of kids following me around (and I was only 22 years old, and a new college grad)!”

President Barack Obama visited New Orleans today for the first time since being elected President of the United States. His first visit was at  Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School were he addressed students and encouraged them to say in school regardless of their circumstances. In his efforts to relate to the impressionable crowd, he talked about his upbringing and his experience as a child being raised in a single parent home. He asked them to promise that they would continue to work hard in school each and every day.
